Screen shot 2020 07 17 at 085005As a school whose moto is Striving For Excellence and where the values of our school, REACH, are about just that, reaching for the next opportunity, idea, piece of knowledge we are starting a completely new scheme of work with our year 7 students as part of their introduction to the Wilmington Mindset.  This new scheme of work has been developed by staff at the school working with the LASAR Research Centre from Canterbury Christ Church University.  The Project is titled, Epistemic Insight and is all about learning about learning, this is part of the Big Questions in Classrooms initiative which is funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation.  It will equip the students with the skills and knowledge to begin their secondary school learning journey by exploring some ‘big questions’ and working out how different disciplines tackle the same subject.  This new project will be delivered by the Senior Team of the school as a way of ensuring that the key skills for life long meaning are embedded from the start and underpin all that we seek to do in developing inquisitive and lifelong learners.  We are very excited by this new research project and all of the wonderful opportunities that it will bring for the students.  Look out later in the year for the results of all their work as they explore the question ‘What does it mean to be human?’.

Pictured below, excerpts from the accompanying workbook.

In this practical lesson students had an introduction to using a microscope. All equipment was cleaned and each student washed their hands prior to using the microscopes in line with our Covid safety policy. Each group examined a pre-prepared specimen slide to familiarise themselves with the apparatus and its capabilities. Specimens included, a house fly leg, water flea, mouse fur and bee wing which the students thoroughly enjoyed studying!
