Our new Fitness Suite has been unveiled as part of the new student facilities in the Holmes Building.  Our PE Department have received a full induction to introduce them to the new state of the art equipment in terms of functionality as well as how best to create bespoke student induction programmes.  Students across all year groups will have the opportunity to use the facilities during lessons and in our extra-curricular clubs.

Pictured below our PE Department being put through their paces by the visiting instructor!

Duke of Edinburgh Award.  We have been completely inundated with applications for Duke of Edinburgh from our Year 9’s and 10’s and have had over 130 completed application. We are really excited by the level of engagement shown to the award and delighted to hear that so many students have already started a broad range of volunteering, skill and physical activities. The deadline for payment and final enrolment forms is Wednesday 22nd September. Payment is £24 and must be completed via ParentPay. Enrolment forms should be emailed to Mrs Shooman-Taylor or delivered by hand to the PE Office.

G3Introduced Mrs Jennings, Teacher of Design Technology.  “I am delighted to share my experience of Design and teach within the WGSG community, having enjoyed an extensive and fast-paced career in textiles for fashion and interior design. Designing for both commercial & high-end markets, whilst mentoring future talent has been my focus for many years. With experience in a variety of markets and design roles, I am inspired to share, teach and motivate students with an emphasis on real world industry and relevant design roles for the future. Design & Technology has never been so vital as we embrace an era with a focus on environment and sustainability. I am keen to provide an awareness and equip WGSG students for their future exciting roles. My other interests include gardening, book club, painting, photography, art exhibitions, cookery shows, eating out & forever improving my home whenever possible!”

 “The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It’s about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it’s about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together.” –Barack Obama

Our Geography Department holds the GA’s gold Centre of Excellence quality mark for excellence in our geography curriculum and for our contribution to supporting geographical education in the local area.   We work to inspire our students with a love of all aspects of geography and are keen to create in them a curiosity which drives students not only to excel academically but (regulations willing!) to also go out and literally explore their world.  This term we welcomed a new member of the Department;

Our new Teacher of Geography, Mr Lavelle has been working with our Year 7 Geographers as they investigate the question “What is Geography?” in the context of location knowledge as well as human and physical geography.

Our WG6 A level Sciences with OCR courses include a practical endorsement qualification. Students complete a series of practicals throughout the course to demonstrate their competency in practical skills. This qualification is highly sought after by universities offering STEM courses.

Today the Year 12 Chemists were assessed on their ability to carry out an experiment to produce data which they could use to calculate the relative atomic mass of magnesium.

They collected and recorded the volume of hydrogen gas produced when they reacted magnesium ribbon with acid. They then applied their understanding of equations covered in lessons to calculate the Ar of Magnesium from their results.

Our Food Technology students are back in the kitchen and undertaking practical lessons.  Miss Schweitzer’s Year 10 GCSE students have been learning about Macronutrients, in particular High Biological Valued proteins. In this week’s lesson students have been expertly filleting fish!
