Blog week ending 24th September

Posted on: 24/09/2021

This week, ahead of our Open Events next month, we have recorded some new segments for an online film which will be available to view on our website to provide local families with an introduction and feel for our wonderful school and it’s students and staff.  It is always my pleasure to invite prospective parents and carers and their children into our school so that they can experience our vibrant and aspirational school for themselves.  This year we will be offering families the opportunity to attend either in person or via our film, online.

Families with students currently in Year 6, can reserve a space by clicking the below link.

Our Music Department, lead by Mrs Dent offers endless opportunities for self-expression and creativity.  In addition to music lessons, students are able to attend music clubs, receive musical instrument and singing lessons (for a fee) as well as access to our music studio to practice and rehearse for out of school lessons and productions.

Congratulations to one of our students Binu T of Y9 who has just received a distinction in her latest singing exam.  Binu is an extremely talented student who has been singing as part of choirs and individually for many years.  Binu has written an account of her musical journey below, which I’m sure will inspire our students to consider taking part in a music club or learning an instrument.

G2“I have been singing since the age of 3 and have ever since had a passion for it. I enjoy the diversity of music as I feel I can express myself throughout singing and playing instruments. I have been lucky enough to perform a solo at the Royal Festival Hall and the O2 Arena; I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity. Performing with the junior choir and singing solos to audiences has helped me boost my confidence as an individual. Recently, I sat my Grade 3 ABRSM singing exam and achieved a distinction! I was very nervous to do my exam as I had a variety of songs that were very different from each other, the songs I sang consisted of Heidenroslein by F. Schubert, The Owls by P. Jenkyns, The Sunflower by C. Barratt, and The Cuckoo by M. Shaw. I enjoy singing in different languages very much. I think singing is also linked to learning about different cultures, and how music differs a lot throughout the world. I love working with my peers to create and compose music as a band because I like to incorporate everyone's individual tastes into one to make a unique piece of music” By Binu T of 9H

Pictured below, our Year 7 students taking advantage of the extensive range of instruments and equipment available in the Music Department during lessons!  To find out more about our Music Clubs and tuition on offer, please see Mrs Dent.

AlIntroducing Mrs Handley, Teach or English; “I recently joined WGSG in September 2021 as an English teacher. I have happily worked within education for the past 12 years after a career change from the finance industry. In my 12 years in education I have had various roles and more recently spent three years as a head of Year providing pastoral support for students. I am passionate about English and passionate about equipping the students with the skills and confidence they need to achieve their full potential. Outside of the classroom I love travelling and being outside with my family. As well as regularly attending the theatre and cinema - I have also rediscovered my love of the gym! I practise meditation and mindfulness daily and have brought this into the classroom in my previous school”

Our English Department runs an exciting and varied programme of extra-curricular clubs and support sessions, including Debate Club run by Mrs Handley.  For more information and to sign up, students should visit the English office in the Holmes Building.
