Blog week ending 12th November
Each year we mark Remembrance Day with an all-school service, this year we gathered together via Teams from our forms to share a moment of quiet contemplation to give thanks and spare a thought for all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice so that our way of life and freedom can be protected. As part of our service I shared the below memorial video to remember the people of all nations that have been lost in conflicts.
Our Year 7 Scientists have been learning separating techniques and in this practical lesson investigated the boiling point of water and the impact of adding a compound, in this case, rock salt. Students used thermometers to monitor the changes in temperatures and plotted the results on a graph.
Our Year 11 students are making final preparations ahead of their mock examinations commencing 15th November. In order to help support Y11 students with their endeavours both in school and at home staff have been reiterating key revision techniques and sharing tips to complement work done at school. Mrs Price, our Examinations Officer has run an assembly this week alongside issuing final individual timetables and instructions to students. If anyone has any questions regarding the mocks please contact Mrs Price directly on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our Year 10 Engineers are currently studying town planning in the context of sustainability and the environment. Students are planning their designs before manufacturing scale models. Ultimately all work will be combined to create a ‘new town’ plan.
Kayleigh B of Year 9 has been appointment as one of the representatives for our forthcoming Nurture Garden. The Nurture Garden will be situated at the entrance to Learning Support at the Woodgate Centre. Work is due to commence as part of our WG6 Electives Programme, with students from WG6 working with the Nurture Garden student representatives to plan, design and create the garden ahead of Spring planting. In anticipation of the project, Kayleigh has started painting feeders which will be hung around the garden to encourage and support the many birds and squirrels around our school site.

Our Librarian, Miss Ogunkanmi (pictured below with students), runs a series of book clubs for students to get involved with the library, read and discuss new books and crucially, choose new titles to add to our library shelves! Pictured below, our Year 7 Book Club who gathered to help Miss Ogunkanmi select a range of new fiction books as well as explore existing books already available. Year 7 Book Club meets on Monday lunchtimes and everyone is welcome!
Our Years 10 &11 Book Club runs on Thursday lunchtime Week 1
Our WG6 Students undertake work placements as part of their study programme, April and a number of her colleagues have recently completed a placement at our business partners Laing O’Rourke. April has provided the following account;
“During the October half term, myself and some other members of the PCP classes attended a work experience placement at the highly successful construction company, Laing O’Rourke. At the head office, Bridge Place in Dartford, we joined in with the Graduates and Degree Apprentices for an early talent workshop, learning how to use different software for data management and BIM. It was very exciting to be in a professional environment especially as the offices and facilities were very modern. It was also rewarding to meet lots of powerful people within Laing O’Rourke who were very welcoming and enthusiastic.”

We were extremely sad to learn of the passing of local Councillor Ann Allen. Mr Kite, Leader of Dartford Borough Council said of Ann “she was held in high regards for the many exceptional things that she did for the Council and our communities, she worked tirelessly to help as many people as possible and will be greatly missed”. Certainly, she will be greatly missed by us, she was a huge supporter of WGSG and always strove to make a positive difference for all of the children and young people across the borough.
A virtual book of condolences has been opened should you wish to leave a comment or share a memory of Ann. www.tolbc.com/AnnAllen
